Neem Karoli Baba  known to his followers as Maharaj-ji - was a Hindu guru, mystic and devotee of the Hindu lord Hanuman.He is known outside India for being the guru of a number of Americans who travelled to India in the 1960s and 70s, the most well-known being the spiritual teachers Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das, and the musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. His ashrams are in Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Shimla, Neem Karoli village near Khimasepur in Farrukhabad, Bhumiadhar, Hanumangarhi, Lucknow, Delhi in India and in Taos, New Mexico, US. 


KainchiDham Mela, which is held  on 15th June every year at a short distance away from the popular hill station in India (on Kainchi Dham, Nainital – Almora/Ranikhet National Highway), Nainital. Among the most well known of Neem Karoli Baba's disciples were spiritual teacher Ram Dass (the author of Be Here Now), teacher/performer Bhagavan Das, Lama Surya Das[ and the musicians Jai Uttal and Krishna Das and Trevor Hall (Rampriya Das). Other notable devotees include humanitarian Larry Brilliant and his wife Girija, Dada Mukerjee (former professor at Allahabad University, Uttar Pradesh, India), scholar and writer Yvette Rosser, John Bush filmmaker, and Daniel Goleman author of The Varieties of the Meditative Experience and Emotional Intelligence.Baba Hari Dass (Haridas) was not a disciple, but he supervised several buildings and maintained the ashrams in the Nainital area (1954-1968) before heading to the USA to become a spiritual teacher in California at the beginning of 1971.



Steve Jobs, along with his friend Dan Kottke, traveled to India in April 1974 to study Hinduism and Indian spirituality; they planned also to meet Neem Karoli Baba, but arrived to find the guru had died the previous September. Hollywood actress Julia Roberts was also influenced by Neem Karoli Baba. A picture of him drew Roberts to Hinduism. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of facebook, influenced by Steve Jobs, visited Neem Karoli Baba's (Maharajji) ashram in Kainchi. Larry Brilliant took Google’s Larry Page and Jeffrey Skoll, co-founder of eBay, on the pilgrimage.

Steve Jobs always had an intense connection with India and his stories in Hare Krishna temple are a testament to it. It was 1974, Steve Jobs had come to India accompanied by his friend Dan Kottle. Jobs was in search of an eternal peace and motivation after going through a series of failures in his life.
After hearing the legends of Ashram and Neem Karoli Baba, Steve wanted to meet Baba and take his blessings. However, before his arrival, Baba had left his body (Mahasamadhi) on Septemeber 11, 1973. They stayed in the Ashram for a long time, listened to the teachings of Baba, meditated far-off before going back to the US to start Apple Inc. Interestingly, Kottle became the first employee of the company and the rest is history.

Steve Jobs has mentioned in many places about his spiritual experience in India. Mythos says that Neem Karoli Baba’s favorite fruit became the logo of Apple Inc, one of the world’s most influential companies. It is also said that Steve had a picture of Baba under his pillow when he was counting his last breaths on his deathbed.


Vinod Joshi recalls Mark’s Visit to Ashram

Vinod Joshi, a bubbly man with twinkling eyes, who has spent his life in the service of Neem Karoli Baba recalls Mark’s visit to Ashram. Economic times mentions in its article that a few years ago, Vinod Joshi receives a call from Larry Brilliant. Lary is an American Physician and former director of Google’s philanthropic arm, Google.org.




Larry said that some Mark would be coming to the Ashram for a day. Vinod hardly remembers the date as Mark was no one at that time. Facebook was yet to become a daily need of over a billion and a half people. He says that Mark Zuckerberg drove to the Ashram for a day visit but ended up staying for two good days.
